Columbus is the perfect little town with southern charm + a quaint main street with local boutiques. The base has a large + welcoming community with tons of activities going on. It’s a short drive to big cities, beaches, + any store Columbus may be missing. Columbus + the local areas are known for southern hospitality, you won’t be disappointed. I hope you love Columbus as much as we have!
Things to know about Columbus Air Force Base
I am a Colorado girl through + through, but I have loved the southern hospitality + learning what the south is all about! It has a small town feel but everything you need. The people are amazing + will spark up a conversation anywhere. Locals love the base + are very appreciate for your service. I have grown accustomed to the simple way of life, warm summer nights, + having my husband home *almost* every night. Even tried sweet tea a few times…haven’t quite adapted to that yet!

The Mississippi way of life was a culture shock for me when I first moved here – I’d never been to the South before and when we moved in the middle of the heat in July, this Oregon girl was SWEATING. I tried to remember over and over how Jen describes coming home to the South – the humidity is like a big hug welcoming you home. Mississippi is a slower way of life and I’ve learned to appreciate that over the years living here. I work within the community and know that wherever I go I’ll likely run into someone I know who will greet me with a smile and a “how y’all doin’?”. Southern hospitality is here at it’s finest and the people here teach you that small town living is pure wholesomeness at it’s core. The heart of Columbus is seen through it’s churches, it’s schools (this Friday Night Lights) and it’s food. I’ve come to love and appreciate finding the best beans and rice or banana pudding or even mint sweet tea. The pride Mississipians have in their culture is not to be missed. Life on base is also slower, family time is abundant and weekend BBQ’s can often be the highlight of your week – but that’s the beauty of the small town culture – just appreciating your time spent with those you love.

Learn to appreciate the small talk and how relationship-oriented everyone is! Get used to spending an unexpected 10 to 20 or even 30 minutes catching up on how do you do’s and what’s the latest that’s been going on in your life. I learned to take life nice & slow loving living in this small, southern town.
