I never in a million years thought I would become a “military spouse”.
As a born and raised Iowan, I am so proud to say I met my husband in good ol’ Iowa. We met through another military spouse (who happened to be my college roommate) + her now husband (who happened to be a great friend of mine growing up). Small world, isn’t it?
At the time my husband had just completed track select during pilot training at Columbus Air Force Base, so I felt pretty late to the military game compared to the other military wives/girlfriends I had been meeting. I remember being grateful that I was learning about the military lifestyle alongside one of my closest girl friends. It was comforting to know I had a space to share my candid thoughts, struggles and hundreds of questions.
My husband dropped an assignment to McChord Air Force Base in Tacoma, WA out of pilot training. Just like that we were having very serious conversations about me relocating from Iowa to Washington to do life with him. I’m sure we sounded like two crazy kids telling our family and friends what our plan was, but we stood firm on our foundation of faith, love and communication.
Today, I am sitting here confident (and very proud) of the kickass woman I’ve grown to be. Military life is ever-changing, and at times frustrating. It’s also full of incredible opportunities, if you choose to see it through that lens. Opportunities to live in beautiful places you otherwise wouldn’t. Meet friends you otherwise would’ve never crossed paths with. And, lead by example for what service and sacrifice can look like.
